A Runway as a Catwalk

It was an imposing line-up driving out over the runway of the Black Forest Airport at Lahr. At its head was the large TJS 560 sweeper blower, followed by other sweeper blowers, then snow cutter blowers, spraying machines, large-surface mowing machines and sweepers for both land-side and air-side at airports. At the two-day SCHMIDT Inter-National Airport Event experts from all over the world were shown what modern equipment can accomplish at an airport.

Approximately 180 airport customers from 25 countries had come to Lahr on 11th. and 12th. October to gather information on SCHMIDT Airport Equipment's products and new developments. Talks given by experts and discussions with the product managers, combined with an inspection of the machines and vehicles gave the representatives of domestic and international airports the opportunity to see at first hand the products from SCHMIDT and the other two guest companies at the event, UNIMOG and MULAG.

For two whole days, Berthold Ketterer, the manager of the SCHMIDT Business Unit Airport and his colleagues were available to talk to the experts and the press at the premiere of the SCHMIDT International Airport Event. It was much more than a successful prelude, thought Ketterer. "It was an enormous success," he claimed. The visitors' response was gratifying felt Carmen Heising, an assistant to the executive board and Robert Lambrou, SCHMIDT's marketing manager, in whose hands a large part of the organisation lay. "We have received very positive feedback," said Robert Lambrou.

The guests - from, among other places, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Great Britain, India, France, Switzerland, Iceland and many German airports – were not only treated to an impressive show on the airport at Lahr. They were also put up in the four-star Colosseo hotel in the grounds of Germany's largest theme park , the Europa-Park in Rust, where a varied programme of evening entertainments was offered.

The centre of the stage during the two-day event was, however, occupied by the vehicles, and they could be examined at close quarters. Test runs out over the runway of the airport were in great demand and the fact that it was not only the big machines like the truck-mounted AS 990 sweeper, the towed TJS 560 sweeper blower or the SUPRA 4001 snow cutter blower which attracted interest could be shown by the example of the small SWINGO compact sweeper. Its great manoeuvrability tempted more than one visitor to try a winding trip around the airport fire brigade's building.
